Port Market

Colloquially known as “the meat market,” this Victorian-era railway façade can be confusing when viewed from the outside. Like a misplaced piece of architectural history across from a dingy port, the building itself seems strangely grandiose for such a non-descript part of town. Once you walk inside, however—particularly on Saturday afternoons—the wafting aromas and wealth of restaurants instantly justify the exterior. Like Argentina, Uruguay has some of the world’s best meat and the locals are none too proud. This market is a carnivore’s culinary fantasy, as seemingly every cut of every meat is available on the wood-fired grills. Peruse the different restaurants and stands and pair the meat with red wine, and if your eyes need a break from the meat-scented smoke, the market out back features traditional craft stalls as well as flowers, produce, and gifts.
