Damnoen Saduak floating market, Thailand

Best for: An all-round, sensory experience About: Thailand is well known for its unique floating markets and the most famous among them is Damnoen Saduak. About 120km southwest of Bangkok in the Ratchaburi province, it is a two-hour bus ride from the capital. The market consists of hundreds of flat boats on the canal selling fruits, vegetables and local meals, along with souvenirs, clothes and artefacts. You can rent a boat from any pier that lines Sukhaphiban 1, the land route to the floating market area. The best time to visit Damnoen Saduakis at 6am when it just opens, well before the touristy crowd jams the canal. Sail around the canal at dawn, pick up some exotic fruits from one of the bamboo-hat-clad women peddling them and have a delicious Thai breakfast from a flat boat. This is also the time when you can see rural Thai life at its best, as vendors arrange their wares in their boats and shopkeepers offer rice porridge to monks on their way to the monastery.
