Sungei Road Thieves Market, Singapore

Best for: Flea merchandise and antiques About: Singapore’s answer to Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar, the Sungei Road Thieves Market is an antique shopper’s paradise. At Singapore’s oldest flea market, you’ll find everything from old clothes and retro electronics to early editions of bestseller novels and gramophone records. Just off Sungei Road, this tiny kerbside market consists of hawkers laying out their wares on cloth or tarpaulin sheets. You’ll have to really hunt amidst all the jumble to find something you really like, but bargain hard and you might just come out with a vintage gem at a throwaway price. Remember there is no exchange or refund policy here – indeed, the hawker you bought from last week may not even be there the next. Yet, the market is worth a visit for its colourful ambience. With loud music blaring from old speakers, vendors calling out to bargain hunters and peddlers selling delicious bottled drinks, it is truly an offbeat tourist attraction. Guard your bags, wallets and phones; else head back to the market a week later and you just might find it on sale! Source: http://www.cntraveller.in/story/top-5-flea-markets-asia/ By S
